Plant Doctor: a free plant disease identifier app

Folly's Plant Doctor tells you what is wrong with a plant from a single photo. It checks the leaves and stems against 500+ diseases and pests and gives you the likely cause, what it looks like, what causes it, how to prevent it and what to do first. Diagnosis is free on every plan and uses one of the 5 scans a month on the free plan, the same allowance as identification.

If it is a problem Folly can treat, Folly Pro then builds a recovery plan for that one plant and takes it through treatment day by day.

Free on every plan

  • Diagnosis from a photo, across 500+ diseases and pests
  • The likely cause, what it looks like and what causes it
  • What to do first, and how to stop it coming back

  • Report a problem with a result straight from the plant page

How it works

  1. 1

    Photograph the problem

Open the scanner and take a clear photo of the damaged leaf, stem or the whole plant.

  2. 2

    Read the diagnosis

Plant Doctor names the likely cause and shows what it looks like, why it happens and how to prevent it.

  3. 3

    Do the first thing first

Every result starts with what to do now. On Folly Pro, Fix my plant turns it into a plan for that plant.

What Plant Doctor checks

Yellow leaves, brown tips, spots, mould, wilting and pests all look alike at a glance, which is why so much advice online contradicts itself. Plant Doctor matches the symptoms in your photo against 500+ diseases and pests, including the common houseplant pests such as spider mites, thrips, scale and fungus gnats, and the rots and leaf spots that follow overwatering.

The result is written for someone standing over the plant, not for a botanist, and it starts with the first thing to do. If the match looks wrong, you can report it from the plant page and take another photo.

From diagnosis to recovery, on Folly Pro

A diagnosis tells you what is wrong. A recovery plan gets the plant through it. When a health check finds a problem Folly can treat, Fix my plant asks a few quick questions: what it grows in, indoors or out, how the soil feels, when it was last watered, how firm the stem is, the roots when they matter, and the town it grows in for the local weather.

It then builds a day-by-day plan for that plant: what to do now, what to expect, and check-ins on set days with a reminder and an optional photo, so you can see the first day beside the last. If the plant gets worse, tap Something has changed and the plan changes if it needs to. You can restart it from a recent scan, and when it ends Folly records how it went. While the plan runs, the plant's normal watering and feeding reminders pause, so routine care does not undo the treatment.

How many free diagnoses you get

The free plan includes 5 scans a month, shared between health checks and identification, and the allowance refreshes every month. Plant Doctor itself is not locked behind the subscription: a diagnosis on the free plan gives you the same cause, prevention and first steps as on Folly Pro.

If one month runs long, you can buy a one-off scan pack instead of subscribing. Folly Pro raises the allowance to 30 scans a month and adds the recovery plan.

Questions people ask

Is there a free app that tells you what is wrong with your plant?

Yes. Folly's Plant Doctor diagnoses a plant from a photo on the free plan, with the likely cause, how to prevent it and what to do first. Each health check uses one of the 5 scans a month, which refresh monthly, and one-off scan packs cover a busy month.

Can Plant Doctor identify plant pests?

Yes. Plant Doctor covers 500+ diseases and pests, so it recognises common pests such as spider mites, thrips, scale insects and fungus gnats as well as diseases such as leaf spot and powdery mildew.

What happens after the diagnosis?

Every result tells you what to do first. On Folly Pro, if it is a problem Folly can treat, Fix my plant asks a few quick questions and builds a day-by-day recovery plan with check-ins and reminders.

Does Plant Doctor work on garden plants as well as houseplants?

Yes. It diagnoses from the photo, so it works for houseplants and for plants outdoors, and a recovery plan asks whether the plant is indoors or out before it sets the steps.

Does Folly's plant doctor work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Folly runs on iPhone with iOS 16.4 or later and on Android.
